Container Loading Plans for Bag Orders: The 12% Freight Saving Hiding in Your Carton Table

Two importers shipped 20,000 backpacks from the same city in the same month. One paid $0.31 per unit in ocean freight. The other paid $0.27.

Neither negotiated a better rate. Neither switched forwarders. The difference was a carton table and a loading plan — documents that are free to produce and almost never requested.

CBM is the number most buyers quote. Container utilization is the number that pays.

Custom backpack cartons staged for container loading

Floor loaded or palletized: the first 10%

A 40HQ holds roughly 76 cubic meters of usable space. Palletizing the same cargo on standard EUR or GMA pallets plus stretch wrap and slip sheets consumes 8% to 12% of that volume before a single carton is stacked above pallet height.

That is not an argument against pallets. It is an argument for deciding deliberately. Retail DCs that receive in pallet quantities and charge unloading fees will punish a floor-loaded container. Consolidation warehouses that hand-stack by SKU will punish a palletized one. Pick the receiving method first, then design the carton.

Harmonize cartons to the pallet module

Most freight waste is born at the carton drawing stage. A carton that overhangs the 1200 x 800 mm module by 40 mm wastes volume on every pallet, in every container, for the life of the program.

Three rules clean up most of it:

  • Fit the module. Aim for footprints that divide cleanly into 1200 x 800 or 1200 x 1000 mm, leaving under 10 mm of slack.
  • Cap the height. Keep cartons stackable to 2.2–2.4 m loaded, and state compression strength so nobody crushes the bottom layer.
  • Standardize aggressively. Ten active carton sizes across a program is workable. Thirty is a warehouse problem that arrives on your invoice.

Harmonizing cartons usually raises packaging cost by a few cents per unit and removes 5% to 10% of freight volume. Run that arithmetic before rejecting the redesign.

Mixed SKU carton stacking for a bag program

Mixed SKU loading is an engineering task, not a packing task

When one container carries six SKUs in different carton sizes, weight distribution decides whether the shipment arrives square or arrives with a damage claim.

The rules are unglamorous and effective:

  • Heavy low, light high. Dense cartons on the floor and over the axles; light, crushable cartons on top.
  • Never stack rigid hardware boxes directly on soft goods. Put a liner or a rigid carton layer between them, or accept creased back panels.
  • Cross-tie the stack. Alternate orientation every two layers to lock the load. A wall of cartons with aligned seams shears in heavy weather.
  • Reserve the door end for last-off SKUs. Door-end cargo gets handled three extra times in transit.

A loading plan that ignores these rules is not a plan. It is a diagram of what happened.

Demand three documents before the doors close

Your buyer-side protection is documentary, and it costs nothing to ask for:

  1. The carton table. Every SKU with carton dimensions, net and gross weight, units per carton, and total cartons.
  2. The stuffing plan. A layer-by-layer diagram with weights per layer and the sequence of loading.
  3. The loading report. Photographs at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% loaded, the seal number, and the container and trailer numbers — sent before departure, not after.

Buyers who request these three documents get 5% to 12% better utilization on average and a defensible file the day a claim is filed.

Loaded container and packed bag program

Freight is designed, then negotiated

Rates move with the market. Utilization is set by decisions you control in the sampling stage: carton dimensions, packaging density, and how many SKUs share the container. Factories that build loading plans as standard practice ship more units per dollar than factories that only quote a rate — and the gap shows up on every invoice, not once a year.

SimiBag includes carton tables and a stuffing plan with every production order, and our engineering team will review your existing cartons for utilization before the next booking. Send us your SKU list and carton sizes and we will return the plan. Start at simibag.com.
